Reflections

Each fall, the PTA sponsors the Reflections Program, a fine arts recognition and achievement program designed to encourage children to express their individuality and creativity through various artistic media. This year theme is: "Beauty is . . ."

The value of fine arts in a child’s intellectual development has been well documented. The Reflection Program seeks to encourage students to explore and learn about various art forms. Although most entries are submitted in the visual arts category (drawings, paintings, sketches, etc.), many students submit entries in the remaining five categories: literature
(poems, stories, etc.), photography, dance choreography, music composition, and film/video production. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their creative talents. Since the program’s establishment in 1969, more than ten million students have participated nationwide.

We are holding free workshops for students on Friday, Oct. 2 (Kindergarten: 10:30 to 12:15; 4th/5th Grader: 11:50 to 12:30: and all grades: 3:00). Another workshop for all grades will be held on Wed, Oct. 7, at 2:30 p.m.

BVE will be showcasing all entries at the PTA/Parent Ed night on Oct. 15, at Math Night on Oct. 22, and one day at lunchtime so the children can see their classmates' works of art. Deadline for entries is Oct. 13. Forms and rules are available in the library and in the school office.

Last year, the entries of 24 BVE students were advanced to the Regional Showcase hosted by the Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs. Three students (Keily Sarica - visual arts, Marcello Severo - musical composition, and Emmerson Webb - photography) had their entries advanced to District level (Contra Costa County). Marcello's piano composition was advanced to the State, where he won an Award of Merit.
