Living in the World of Texting, Video Games and Facebook: Are They a Modern Means of Essential Connection or Tools of Addiction and Exploitation?

Monday, February 22, 2010 7:00 to 9:00pm
, Miramonte High School Theatre, 750 Moraga Way, Orinda, CA 94563

Between cell phones, social networking and online multiplayer video games, teens today have tools for greater independence and connection than ever before; however, some parents are discovering that having the means for independence and connection, without the maturity to use those tools responsibly, can be a dangerous combination for their teenagers.  Who’s right? Both are!  Steven Freemire will discuss the many issues parents and teens face navigating the exciting and ever
changing, yet potentially harmful world of communication technologies, including:

  1. Providing guidelines for assessing the differences between use, abuse and dependence.
  2. Offering practical ideas and tools to help parents manage their children’s use and potential overuse of electronic technology.
  3. Advising parents how to address the danger of cyber bullying and online predators, and how to respond if their children have been victimized.

Parents will learn how to reinforce the positives that technologies offer, while also preventing and breaking unhealthy patterns of use.

Steven Freemire, MFT is the director of the Contra Costa Men’s Center and has a private psychotherapy and coaching practice in Berkeley and Walnut Creek. He is an adjunct faculty member at John F. Kennedy University, where he teaches classes on “Counseling Men and Teen Boys.” In his practice, he works with individual men and women, teens and their families, couples and groups. Together with his wife, Catherine Freemire, LCSW, he co
leads workshops for couples called “The Art and Skill of a Happy Marriage.” He also provides consulting to organizations on team building and conflict resolution. Steven is the proud father of two high schoolage girls.
