A number of meetings are organised during the year to help inform and advise parents about topics of interest andrelevance to families.  Examples of events for the current school year are:
  • a seminar on October 15th about Financial Literacy - helping parents talk to children about money matters and developing healthy financial habits.
  • a presentation and discussion about how California schools are funded, including an explanation of the impact and implications of historical measures such as Prop. 13

Read Across America
A program of the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America Day--celebrated annually on Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2 (unless it falls at a weekend) --generates enthusiasm for reading nationwide and focuses the country’s attention on how important it is to motivate children to read.

Drama Club
Each year 4th and 5th Graders have the opportunity to take part in Drama Club, which meets weekly.  Rehearsals culminate in performances for parents, friends and the rest of the school community.

Communications

August  Mailer

The mailer provides families with emergency forms needed by the school, as well as information about the upcoming school year. It also provides details about Bobcat Day, where families give their contribution to the PTA and receive their children’s classroom assignments.

Bobcat Beat

This is a magazine-style newsletter that gives families more insight into Burton Valley Elementary.  Read articles about educational issues. Get to know teachers and staff through profiles and Q and A’s. And check out samples of student artwork and writing. Traditionally, it has been distributed quarterly through the Friday Folder, but will become an e-magazine this year! Look for the link on this website!

Bobcat Day

Bobcat Day is the kickoff of the school year. Traditionally a day or two before the first day of class, families go to campus to get teacher assignments, give a contribution to the PTA, sign up for volunteer jobs and get information on special programs such as Boy and Girl Scouts, LASF and before-school Spanish instruction.

Broadcast (e-Newsletter)

The Broadcast is a weekly newsletter that provides detailed information about activities going on at Burton Valley Elementary. The newsletter, which is sent out via email every Friday, tells parents about special events on campus. It also is a forum for advertising things such as music lessons, vacation rentals, and club programs such as Odyssey of the Mind. If you would like to post a notice in the Broadcast, please make a submission by Wednesday morning to Gina Dawson, gdawson@gmail.com. To receive the Broadcast, please contact subscription manager Stacey Bauer, .

Directory

The directory is often a lifeline for BVE families! A form in the August Mailer will ask for your address and contact information, as well as request permission for the information to be published in the school directory. The information is not shared with other organizations and is to be used strictly for school business. The directory is free to those who pay to join the PTA, and additional copies can be ordered.

New Family Welcome

Families new to BVE can get to Bobcat Day early to take a tour of the campus and get first-hand information about the campus and school traditions. Arriving at Burton Valley after the school year has begun? You can still contact Renee Clever or Kaisa Lyon and request a tour.
