Think About It

Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.

- John F. Kennedy

topPresident's Message

Welcome to a great year at Burton Valley! I hope everyone had a summer filled with laughter and fun. To the new families I welcome you and hope your experience so far has left you and your children with a warm feeling for Burton Valley. To all the returning families and new families I hope all is going well and your children are getting used to their new teachers and making new friends.

There are so many reasons why Burton Valley is such an outstanding elementary school; the amazing administration headed up by our phenomenal Principal Sue Rusk and our Vice Principal Chris Reddam, our fantastic office staff lead by the astounding Marsha Dahl, and our wonderful teaching staff. They are a hugely talented group of educators who truly care about each child and all deserve our praise. The support here for each and every child goes way beyond the norm and I'm proud to say my children are Bobcats and Bobcat alumni. The parents' involvement and support here is also incredible. Just last year parents volunteered an amazing 45,000 hours.

The unsung heroes of getting us all off to such a great start are the organizers of Bobcat Day: Susanne Everly, Cari Thrasher and Missy Parry as well as many other selfless volunteers who greeted, directed and compiled our paperwork in a timely fashion with such patience and grace. Thank you all for a job well done.

The other heroes of Bobcat Day are the Annual Fund volunteers lead by Colleen Miller who sorted through the registration forms and tallied all the information directing funds to the  PTA membership dues, lunch money deposits, calendar and directory orders and the PTA Annual Fund contributions so important in these trying budgetary times. Thank you to all for your generous contributions because we know what our school would be like without parent support and whatever amount contributed is appreciated.

Lastly, thank you all for coming to the Welcome Back Coffees. It was nice reuniting with friends and meeting new ones. Thanks to Renee Clever and Kaisa Lyon for organizing that as well.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions and/or concerns. I am excited for a great year and look forward to seeing you at the PTA meetings the Third Thursday's of each month.

Thanks for your attention,
Dana Fillinger Ashburn

Lafayette Farmer's Market!
The City of Lafayette will have a trial farmers market at the downtown Plaza Park on the first three Thursday evenings of September (9/3, 9/10, 9/17) from 4-8pm.  This market will be have a local focus with most of the farmers coming from less than 100 miles!  The purpose of the trial is to see if there are any traffic or parking issues, and to gauge the impact on local businesses.  So, please try to find an easy place to park and then walk to the market, (Mt. Diablo Rd., east of the new library has many parking spots)  or ride your bike, and consider visiting other stores and restaurants while in town.  Please spread the word and help make the farmers market a big success!! http://www.cccfm.org/pages/laf.html

Want help planting an edible garden at home?   Ask the Urban Farmers!
Pilot in Lafayette: Many of us in Lafayette have yard space to grow veggies, but not the time or expertise.  There is a new non-profit called The Urban Farmers (www.theurbanfarmers.org) which aims to farm your backyard for you.  You supply the land and water and they supply the labor and expertise.  All you need is 300+ square feet of growing space.  You receive all the food you can eat and the excess is distributed to neighbors and charities.  They are hoping to pilot their model in Lafayette and would like to hear from anyone that might be interested.  Their service would be free.   Send an email to inquiries@theurbanfarmers.org or call (415) 806-7005.

Attention Kindergarten Parents: The first level of Girl Scouts is Daisies and it starts in kindergarten. If you are interested in joining Daisy Girl Scouts, please come to the information meeting on Wednesday, September 9 at 3:05 on the kindergarten playground.  Do You Want to Join a Girl Scout Troop?
Several Girl Scout troops are accepting new members.
Contact TJ Kirke with questions about either item tjkirke@comcast.net

Sweet Thursday at the Lafayette Library:  On September 17 at 7:30, Sara Houghteling will promote Pictures at an Exhibition, a book the New York Times has described as both captivating and elegant.  Set in Paris after World War II, it tells the story of a son's quest to recover his family's lost masterpieces, looted by the Nazis during the occupation.
