topPresident's Message

I hope everyone is staying cool in this never ending Indian summer heat wave. Some people love this but I'm ready to unpack my sweaters and get going with the fall weather. Since that's not going to happen I hope to see big crowds with their whole families attending this Saturday's Family BBQ and Movie Night. Bring the blankets and beach chairs and enjoy the summer night weather with friends and maybe make some new ones. I'm looking forward to Back Forty BBQ I must say! A big thank you to Annette Robison and Gayle Burleigh for organizing this fun event.

The artist in me is excited for the Reflections contest and hope to see a record number of participants this year. The subject is Beauty is... The Co-chairs of this event are doing a great job, Rachel Browne and Linda Murphy. See below for the workshops they are holding to help contestants with their submissions. I look forward to seeing the entries at the next PTA Parent Ed. Meeting, Oct. 15th at 6:30 followed by our speaker Stephanie West, "Kids and Finance" The entries will also be displayed at Math Night on Thursday, Oct. 22nd.

I forgot to mention the winner of the coveted PTA parking spot drawing at our PTA meeting last Thursday. The lucky winner was Elizabeth Sarica and I hope you enjoy the prime spot for the whole month! Congratulations!

Thanks for your attention and as always please call or email me with questions and/or concerns.

The OLSAT (Otis Lennon School Abilities Test), will be given to all third graders in the Lafayette School District the week of October 12th.
The OLSAT is a standardized cognitive abilities test that is taken by children across the nation. It will be used in planning the best possible educational program for your child. Please return the permission slip for testing to your child's teacher by October 9th. If you would like more information, you are invited to attend a parent information meeting on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lafayette School District Office Boardroom, 3477 School Street. Questions may be directed to Rachel Zinn at the district office at 927-3511.

Walk & Roll to School - It's Safer
The presence of walkers and bikers cues drivers to slow their speeds and use caution.  Fewer cars outside the school entrance can improve the school's traffic problems.  Maybe it is possible for your child to walk or bike, even part-way, to school one day a week.   Each child who walks or bikes to school makes it safer for other children who are walking or biking.
International Walk to School Day is Wed., October 7, 2009.  Park and Walk locations will be at St. Mary's & Rohrer and Burton Dr. & Murray.  If you would like to volunteer for one hour that morning, please contact Judy Sarsam attbsarsam@aol.com

The Pumpkins Are Back!
Back by popular demand, we will be selling pumpkins at the Fall Family Picnic.  The pumpkins will be $6 each.  You can make your check payable to BVE PTA and drop it in the box in the office.  You can have your pick of the pumpkins at the picnic and be ready for Halloween.  Please be sure to place your order by October 9th.   Look for more info in Friday Folders.

BVE Parent Education night:  "Financial Literacy:  If You Don't Teach Your Kids about Money, Somebody Else Will.
"  Join us for an informative and timely presentation on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m., following the regularly scheduled PTA meeting at 6:30 p.m.  This 45-minute seminar, given by Stefanie West, Esq., of Hollander & Hollander, discusses how to teach your children basic money management skills which will help them grow into financially responsible adults.  Also discussed are needs vs. wants, budgeting, and healthy ways to approach spending

Fall Family Picnic - Sunday, October 18th from 11:00am - 3:00pm
Bring the whole family and try your hand at the carnival games, bubble gum blowing contest, cake walk and much more!  Lunch will be available for
purchase from Top Dog.  Come join the fun for $5 per family.  Look out for the sign-up form in the Friday Folder. If you have any questions or would like to
volunteer, please contact Meredith White at mer.white@yahoo.com

The top 2 reasons people call me...answered!

1. Why does my youngest child have a balance and my other children have "0"?

The money for your family should ALWAYS be put on the youngest child's account....they are the banker for the family. Yea youngest child!!! This is done for many reasons...because that's the way the system works, the child that remains the longest at BVE keeps the money year after year, & well, that's because that is the way the system works!
If you choose to put money on different children in your family this is what happens: 1. The system reads it as two different families & "splits" the family -so if one child goes negative -the system doesn't search for money in other siblings account it just says -tough luck! 2. If we don't manually catch it: ie. I have to know who in the entire school is related to whom and put them back together manually...the child with the negative balance card gets pulled. 3. I have to go through all 700+ accounts and move the money manually to the youngest child's account...where it should have been in the first place! 4. Did I mention this is a volunteer job?! Please, just put money on the youngest child -give a girl a break!!! :-O

2. What happens if my account goes negative?

First, please don't let this happen! I HATE to look into your darling children's eyes and tell them that all they can get is a cold cheese sandwich...I really am a nice person and I tend to cry right along with them...please don't make me the bad guy!
You recieve emailed balance statements weekly from hot lunch -read them! add money if needed! Typically you will also get a bright red envelope in the Friday Folder saying the account is in the negative (this is a lot of work!) & on top of it...if you don't make a payment by Friday afternoon...we will call you to tell you... again (3rd warning???) that money needs to be deposited by Monday 9am.
So at 11:45 Monday morning when I am crying along side your child as I hand them the cold cheese sandwich...don't take the time to call me & complain! Make a deposit on line or send in a check, but realize that does NOT mean that I will run up to school the next morning and put your childs card back! Did I mention this is a volunteer job?! :-)

If you have any questions feel free to email me at bvehotlunch@yahoo.com I can check that from home!
