topPresident's Message

The leaves are definitely starting to turn! This truly is my favorite time of year. With my sons' football games half over and  my daughter's soccer games as well I feel that fall is truly upon us. We had a great turnout for the Blood Drive this Tuesday. We had 120 people who took the time to give blood. We thank you and Kelsey Kobayashi who organized the day.

The parking lot was noticeably empty due to Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday. Burton Valley's carbon footprint became much smaller thanks to Judy Sarsam who coordinated all the fun. It was a great reminder to walk with friends instead of rushing in a car!

Next week is the Third Thursday of the month and you know what that means...PTA meeting! This month please join us at night for a very quick meeting from 6:30-7:00 followed by Stefanie West from 7:00-8:00pm. She will speak on "Financial Literacy: If You Don't Teach Kids About Money, Who Will?". Topics include: allowance, budgeting, needs vs. wants, and much more. This night is open to the district so you may see parents from other schools here as well. We will be in the teacher's lounge, not room 35, to accommodate more people. See you there.

Please check the calendar for all of the fantastic events coming up this month. Our website link is to the right under Quick Links. Always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thanks for your attention,

Dana Fillinger Ashburn

We were able to collect a total of 33 units of blood. That is up to 99 patients, in local community hospitals, that will be affected, helped, and potentially saved directly due to the results of this blood drive. You can still donate blood anytime at a local blood center or drive. Visit www.givelife.org/index_flash.cfm

And to those who joined the marrow registry. Join anytime at www.bethematch.com

International Walk to School Day was a HUGE Success!
Over 350 BVE students joined friends, neighbors and families around the globe by walking and riding bikes to school on October 7, 2009.  Anyone notice the reduction in traffic and congestion around the school? Anyone notice the happy faces on kids and parents as they strolled and biked, chatting on the sidewalks and in the bike racks? Anyone notice how much safer it seemed with so many kids and parents on the streets? Anyone notice it was easier that you thought?  Congratulations to the Raffle Winners:  Saskia Lamb 5th Grade, Olivia Toth 4th Grade, Sam Lum 3rd Grade, Brandon Kim 2nd Grade, Madison Tooker 1st Grade, Natalie Stadt AM Kindergarten, and Lydia Osborn PM Kindergarten.

PTA's Reflections, the fine arts competition and recognition program, is in full swing.  Students still have time to create their artistic interpretation of this year's theme: "Beauty is..."  The deadline for submitting entries is Tuesday,Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m., in the school office (rules and entry forms are available there and in the library).  All entries will be showcased at the PTA/Parent Ed night on Oct. 15, at Math Night on Oct. 22, and one day at lunchtime so the children can see their classmates' works of art.  Please contact Rachel Browne,gorachel@mac.com, or Linda Murphy, bakerandmurphy@yahoo.com with any questions.  To view past entries or to learn more, seehttp://www.capta.org/sections/programs/reflections.cfm.

Parent Education - What Do You Want To Talk About?

We need your help!  We're floating a "Family Forum" monthly discussion ideafor BVE parents to strengthen our ties as a school and a community.  Some topics might include sibling rivalry, chores, bullying, lying, recycling/composting, modeling healthy communication, safety, etc.  If you have a topic you'd like discussed or an area of expertise you'd like to share, let us know.  If you have a preference for either Mondays or Fridays at 1:30 p.m., drop us an e-mail.  We'll keep you posted about our first Family Forum discussion.  Reply to Amanda Somberg at asomberg@askamanda.com.

Fall Phonathon
LASF will launch its Fall Phonathon on Sunday evening Oct 18.  Our goal is to contact new school families and those we weren't able to reach in the Spring.  Even in a good year, California state funding alone cannot provide our public schools with the full range of educational programs essential for a complete, well-rounded education.  In our district, private donations help make up the difference.

Together, your LASF and parent club donations pay for essential programs and services that would be lost due to state funding shortfalls.  Lafayette public schools rely heavily on this partnership.  In turn, we hope we can rely on you.  Please answer that phonathon call.

Every Child.  Every Classroom.  Every Dollar Counts.

Legislative UpdateLeg

The Burton Valley PTA passed a unanimous resolution in support of Measure G, the upcoming Acalanes High School District parcel tax renewal. You should have received your sample ballot and polling place information in last week's mail. The packet contains an application for an absentee ballot, which must be mailed by Friday, October 23rd. If you think you might be too busy on November 3, please send in for an absentee ballot. Parents of school age children are the most supportive of school parcel taxes, but the least likely to vote! Make your voice heard for the continuation of quality education at our local high schools. Any questions or concerns, contact Alice Stauffer, PTA Legislative Representative ata.stauffer@att.net.

*********
Ballots for the November 3rd election are in the mail. If you are a permanent absentee or have applied for an absentee ballot, your ballot will arrive soon. Make sure you cast your Yes vote for Measure G and mail the ballot back to the county promptly.

Measure G renews and continues the existing parcel tax in the Acalanes Union High School District. There is no increase to the tax rate you currently pay.  Since it was first approved in 1991, this local tax has raised stable, reliable funds for all of the district's comprehensive high schools - Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte.

These funds are used to:
- Preserve science and math courses;
- Offer electives in music, art and foreign languages; and
- Maintain library hours.
The impact of losing Measure G funds would be the equivalent of closing one of the District's four comprehensive high schools.

Hot Lunch

Big Oops! There is school on Monday!
Maybe it was wishful thinking or that I was reading my son's high school schedule, but Burton Valley DOES have school on Monday the 12th.
The menu will be: hot lunch: chicken enchilada's or chicken nuggets or Variety Bar: pasta.
Sorry - my bad!

Send me your best cost cutting tips!
This is the last one I can think of: vinegar. If you mix about 1/5 white vinegar to 4/5 water it makes a great replacement for glass or surface cleaners.   My FAVORITE vinegar tip is to replace fabric softener in the wash with white vinegar. I've been doing this for about 2 months now and I have to say it works great! No vinegar smell -in fact it leaves a clean natural scent & it leaves everything soft -even towels- with no residue! Try it -it's $3.79 a gallon. For more savings (and there are tons!) just google vinegar.
Send me your money saving tips @ bvehotlunch@yahoo.com

Halloween is almost here ... Shelter Inc is in need of costumes. Shelter, Inc is a non-profit that houses homeless families while they are getting their feet back on the ground. The Antioch facility right now has 44 children between the ages of 1-10 years old. We, former Burton Valley students are trying to collect costumes with your help to give to these children. They want to be Superman, Spiderman, a Princess, etc ... for the day just like everyone else.
If you have any new or gently used costumes to donate, we would really appreciate it. We will leave a  box in front of the school office everyday for the next week.  We appreciate any and all efforts to help us fill these kid's wish lists.
