topPresident's Message

What luck we had with the weather for the Fall Family Picnic! Rain and a lot of it the very next day! What a fun affair it was and a huge thank you to Meredith White who chaired that event and to Nicole Berzins who is our VP Social. Our sincere thanks to all the parents, teachers, and Stanley students that helped set up, run and clean up to make the day a success also. The day just wouldn't have been the same without Tripper Ortman who provided the great music and helped announce all the fun activities during the day. The Protzen Family deserve a special thank you for donating all those beautiful pumpkins! They delivered and set up the beautiful pumpkin patch that made the picnic feel so special. How do we not mention the Howard Family for running the cake walk and helping all those folks have so much fun? What a great day! The thanks go on and on...

Red Ribbon week kept us all busy with such great family activities all week. Thank you to Heather McNally and Cathy Sereno for Co-Chairing this important week that facilitated family discussions and had us reading informative worksheets plus all those fun raffle prizes as well.

Did everyone's kids come home jazzed and excited about completing all those laps on Wednesday's Walkathon? What fun to see the sense of accomplishment and pride from so many kids! Thank you to Alyse Pellegrini and Tracey Brewer and their army of volunteers as well. The teachers deserve thanks for helping with this fun fundraiser for our school. What would we do without the support from them!

Thank you to Chris Reddam for organizing another wonderful Math Night this past Thursday. Always a popular night here at BVE! What a treat to also get to see the Reflection Entries displayed as well. Thanks again to Linda Murphy and Rachel Browne.

This has been a busy week at Burton Valley and I've only mentioned some highlights. Please remember that our school would not be what it is without the parent volunteers that help with all these events. Don't be shy to step up and participate! Whatever help you give is always appreciated. This school is also blessed with anunbelievable staff headed by our fantastically caring Principal, Sue Rusk, who is here into the night most nights, still with a smile on her face. She is an inspiration!

Have a great weekend and remember to send in your absentee ballots and vote yes on Measure G!

A huge thank you to each and every one of you that bought a pumpkin at the Fall Picnic!  We raised almost $2000.00 for  Burton Valley's PTA!
A special thank you to Angela Lucas for all of her help with the "Pumpkin Spreadsheet" again this year and to each and every one of you that helped to unload and clean all those pumpkins!  Happy carving!

Thank you to all of the BVE artists who submitted entries in this year's PTA Reflections Fine Arts Competition and Recognition program.  We had 90 entries from our talented students interpreting this year's theme, "Beauty is ...".  Students and parents were able to enjoy the submissions when they were showcased Wednesday at lunch and last night at Math Night.  Entries (visual arts, photography, musical composition, and literature) are being judged and several will be selected for the Regional PTA Showcase in Walnut Creek on December 5.  Congratulations to all!

Simplify Your Life
Is spring cleaning still on your "to do" list?  LASF has a suggestion.... let us take your gently used extras - cameras, laptops, handbags, video game consoles, etc. - and convert them to cash for our schools.  LASF is partnering with the "I Sold It on eBay" store to sell donated items.  LASF gets proceeds from the sale and you - our donors - get a timely tax deduction.  It's simple.

We are collecting items on Sunday November 15 from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Acalanes High School parking lot.  A more detailed list of items we would like to sell along with a list of things we cannot take, can be found at our website, www.lasf.org.  Please tell your friends and neighbors, too.  Simplify your life by clearing out those extra possessions and letting LASF convert them into $$$ for our schools.

LASF Phonathon - Thank You!
Thank you to all the Burton Valley parents who made a donation this week during the LASF phonathon!  LASF would not have raised any money this week without the efforts of the wonderful Burton parents and teachers who made the calls:  Colin Botto, Wendy Clymer, Susan Comber, Jacqueline Florine, Patty Gonser, David Kleinsmith, Lorna Levante, Marc Lurie, Juleen Lapporte, Kaisa Lyon, Barbara Price, Staci Reeder, Annette Robison, Patti McGregor-Schultz, Amanda Somberg, and Kit Turner; and for all the wonderful help with the phonathon paperwork: Heather Tzortzis and Tina Sebree. Thank you so much for your invaluable help!

A special thank you to our BV LASF Fundraising Reps Patty Gonser, Annette Robison and Tina Sebree for organizing the BV volunteers for the Fall Phonathon.

MEASURE GMeasureG: The Postmark Won't Count for Measure G

If you are voting-by-mail in the November 3rd election make sure your ballot is mailed by Saturday, October 24. The ballot MUST arrive in Martinez by Election Day - the postmark does not count.

Measure G renews the Acalanes High School District's existing parcel tax with no increase. These stable, reliable, local funds are critical to the future of our local high schools. Deep state budget cuts have already forced the district to cut its budget by more than $6 million - a loss of over $1,000 per student.  A failure to renew the parcel tax will compound these losses - forcing the district to eliminate up to 70 teaching positions and increase class size for all students.

Only through coordinated support of both our High School District and our K-8 District can we maintain academic excellence that produces successful students, supports families and builds strong communities. Support our schools - vote YES on G - mail your absentee ballot or vote YES on Election Day November 3rd!

Hot Lunch

Lucky Dessert Day
Halloween is this week and it is one of my favorite holidays! Why? I have had a life long love of everything sugar and chocolate! So, a few years ago when I started (on behalf of BVE) going to the 'Walnut Creek Healthy Restaurant Association' meetings I had a new passion to find a way to bring 'dessert' back to hot lunch. The big challenge was following the WCHRA guidelines - tough, but I was up for the challenge!  So, for 3 years now I have been personally coming up with & preparing the dessert for "lucky dessert" day. Not only are they low in sugar I also want them to be kid friendly & seasonal as well as yummy! This month has been pumpkin bars with carmel apple drizzle. Ask your child if they have won one & what they thought. Sometimes, we can be just as passionate about making healthy choices.
BTW- if you see an adult parent dressed for Halloween....we worked hot lunch...we have fun in the kitchen!
Happy Halloween,
Lisa Evaristo   Bvehotlunch@yahoo.com

Former Oakland Raider Coaching Marauders
The Marauders Scout Football team of Walnut Creek has a unique coaching staff this year - a member of the Super Bowl XI World Champion Oakland Raiders,  Art Thoms, and two of his sons make up the coaching staff.
With only two games left, the Walnut Creek Marauders scout team continues to improve and have fun.  Art explains, "We focus on fundamental football skills, hard work, developing discipline and having fun.  The kids have been impressive stepping up to expectations.  Games are played in a scrimmage format, we don't keep score and each child gets a good amount of playing time." The Scout team is comprised of 7 and 8 year olds and allows four 9 year old less than 90 lbs.  The Marauders have several levels and teams up to the age of 14, all are tackle football teams.  Practice is at Accalanes High School in Lafayette three days a week with games on Saturday.   The Marauders also offer a cheer program.  The Thoms coaching staff has enjoyed working with the kids and plans to be back next year coaching the Scouts.  Contact cissy@pattersonassociates.org with questions or visit the Marauders web site at http://www.wcyfmarauders.com/ for more information.
