topPresident's Message

Fantastic turnout for the Family Movie Night and BBQ! I think a round of applause is in order for the two coordinators of that fun event, Annette Robison and Gayle Burleigh. Great job and we all had a great time. The food was delicious, the snacks were terrific (thank you to the 5th graders) and the movie was such fun. Thanks to all that helped and attended.

I also want to thank Karen Severo for heading up the Sally Foster Fundraiser. If you forgot to bring in your orders you can still order online at www.sallyfoster.com and be sure to include our school code 221262. Your orders will be mailed directly to your house. Our school will still receive a 50% profit from all online orders!

Well our wish for cooler weather has come true! What was I thinking-I'm cold! No, just kidding, I love the feel of fall in the air and already the leaves are beginning to drop. So much is in store for this month so please check your school calendars The first event is the Blood Drive headed up by Kelsey Kobayashi on Tuesday, Oct. 6th followed by Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7th.  So much more to follow so please refer to the calendar below or the PTA Website at www.burtonvalleypta.org.   So, get ready to get your rakes out to make those fun piles of leaves to jump into.

As always, feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

Thank You!

Backpack Racks:  Over the last two years, the PTA has funded the Dad's Project to update all the school backpack racks by each classroom. The teachers are thrilled that the numerous backpacks can now be organized!   Many thanks to Dean Burrill, who ran the project, with assistance from other dads: Tom Baginski, Terry Miles, Roy Bleich, Glenn Geotina, John  Barakos, Steve Bauer, Neil Wilson, and Michael Sheehan.   Thanks to Lafayette Ace Hardware for supplying all the materials at their cost, and to the Miles family for donating the wood for re-use from their old deck... this last set of racks was a "green" project!

Thank You BV LASF Class Reps!!!
Our 33 energetic volunteers made and distributed over 700 art portfolios to the classrooms this week. Just in time to store all the amazing artwork that your children will be creating this school year with LASF!!!!

We're Serious about Science

Starting our sixth week of the school year, the LASF science program is in full swing.   Instructors are coming into the classrooms with special lessons on the five senses for kindergarteners and are helping second graders understand the rocky composition of the Earth's crust.  Many fourth graders are busy investigating life found in a drop of pond water and learning how to use a compound microscope.

At Stanley Middle School, it's seventh graders and sheep brains...students use a sheep specimen to identify brain regions and their functions.  Meanwhile, at Acalanes High School, LASF encourages sophisticated scientific experimentation by funding Labquest software for use in data collection and analysis.

Every Child.  Every Classroom.  Every Dollar Counts.

Legislative UpdateLeg

What if one local high school had to close?

Measure G is on the November 3rd ballot to renew and continue the Acalanes Union High School District's existing parcel tax.  Measure G does not increase what you pay now, it stays the same.  The parcel tax raises stable, reliable funds our local high schools - Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte.  Deep cuts in state funding have forced the Acalanes Union High School District to cut its budget by more than $6 million - a cut of over $1,000 per student.

Without parcel tax funds:
·    Class sizes will continue to increase.
·    More teaching positions will be eliminated.
·    Many of the AP, honors and college prep classes our students need to                successfully compete for college and university admission will disappear.
·    Library hours will be cut.

The total impact of losing Measure G funds would be the equivalent of closing one of the district's four high schools. Every vote - especially yours - is critical. Measure G must win with a two-thirds majority.

Learn more - and endorse Measure G - at www.AboutMeasureG.com

Calling all penny pincher's, cheap skates, coupon cutters, deal finders or whatever else we call ourselves!
With a down economy, we are all feeling the pinch. Why not, as a community, share our best savings tips?

I will go first...did you know that if you buy milk -here is my big saving tip. Did you know that it typically cost $5.99+ a gallon for hormone free milk?  Well 7-11 stores carry Berkeley Farms milk, 2 gallons, for $5.49 everyday!!! They take the 'hit' to get you into the store. In my family, where we go through 3 gallons a week, that is a huge savings!

So send me your best tips...and soon...I only have 2 I can think of!
