| President's Message There is nothing like the sweet smell of rain. I hope everyone had a chance to slowdown with some hot chocolate or tea and enjoy the rain. It's moments like these that we treasure. Fall Family picnic is this Sunday so come and join us for some family fun. Don't worry if you didn't sign up just bring your five dollars and come. Feel free to bring blankets to picnic on or sit at one of the decorated tables up top. This year the whole picnic is moved to the front playground and lawn area. We'll have music, dancing, bubble blowing contests, cakewalk, sack races, three legged races, carnival games, football toss and much more-plus Top Dog will be there as well to buy hot dogs or sausages for your enjoyment. Thank you to Meredith White for organizing this fun community building event. A thank you to the Protzen family as well for donating the pumpkins this year. Thanks to all who attended the PTA Meeting/Parent Ed. Night this past Thursday. A wonderful turnout including parents from other elementary schools for a very informative and fun presentation given by Stefanie West. Thanks goes to Mandy Curry and Amanda Somberg for organizing a great evening. Thanks to Cathy VandenBerghe for the yummy coffee and treats provided as well. Get ready for Red Ribbon week next week. So much has been planned for that so check your Friday Folders for important information. Next week we also have the Walkathon which ties into our Healthy Choices theme so nicely. Such a fun event and last year this event raised important funds for our school too! All of this is such fun but be sure to also take the time to hold hands with someone you love and be grateful for all that is around us. What a great school this is, a great community we live in and I feel blessed amidst the craziness of life that I live here!
Thanks for your attention,
Dana Fillinger Ashburn

Red Ribbon Week This year, Burton Valley 's Red Ribbon Week is from Monday, October 19th through Friday, October 23rd. At Burton Valley, Red Ribbon Week is about building habits of quality family time, promoting open communication, choosing healthy options for food, friends and activities. We seek to incorporate the themes of Red Ribbon Week into our current goals of helping children lead balanced, healthy lives. This week will bring attention to nutrition, exercise, safety as well as character. We will also be incorporating the six pillars of our new Character program CHARACTER COUNTS!® Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Each day of the week will focus on a different Healthy Choice that your child can make for his or herself or for the entire family. Each evening there will be a discussion opportunity for families to participate in as well as an activity for the children to complete. Fun and healthy PRIZES will be awarded for participation and completion of the activities. Packets will be sent home in this week's Friday folders. Each evening your child completes an activity, please fill out one of the "raffle tickets" to be turned in the following day. There will be volunteers at two different locations each morning between 8:15 and 8:30 to collect the raffle tickets and activities. (Afternoon kindergarten students can turn in their raffle tickets to their teacher and we will have a raffle for them.) Please refer to the calendar section above and visit the BV PTA web site for an outline of activities for the week. We hope that you enjoy a week of fun and reflection as we all learn to make Healthy Choices! ~Heather McNally and Cathy Sereno, Red Ribbon Week Co-Chairs |

LASF Fall Phonathon Starts This Sunday The Fall Phonathon targets families that are new to Lafayette public schools and families we weren't able to reach during the Spring Phonathon. Please make your LASF donation during the Phonathon this Sunday through Tuesday, 10/18 - 10/20. Or beat us to the punch and make your donation before the Phonathon - you can donate online at http://lasf.org/donate.html or over the phone at 299-0644. Every Child. Every Classroom. Every Dollar Counts. LASF is Moving to the Library We are excited to announce that LASF is moving our administrative offices to the new Lafayette Library and Learning Center at the end of November. The location of the new library is ideal for us - in the center of town and a relatively short distance from all our public schools. More than that, the mission of LASF and the Lafayette Library and Learning Center - enriching public life (and our schools) through intellectual and cultural experiences - are truly complementary. We hope to see you on Grand Opening Day, Saturday November 14.
- From Juleen Lapporte, BV LASF Representative

Legislative Update
Contact Alice Stauffer, PTA Legislative Representative, at a.stauffer@att.net with any questions or concerns. ****** Is Everybody Ready to Vote? Voter registration closes on October 19th. Make sure everyone in your household who is eligible to vote is registered - and, just in case you moved recently - make sure you are registered at your current address...You can start the process right now at http://www.SOS.ca.gov/elections/votereg1.html. Registration is important because Measure G is on the November 3rd ballot. Measure G will provide the district with a reliable source of local funds that cannot be disrupted or seized by the state. Measure G renews and continues the Acalanes Union High School District's existing parcel tax and does not increase the tax rate you now pay. Measure G funds core and elective academic programming. All expenditures will be audited and monitored by an Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee. Senior citizens will be offered a complete exemption. No arguments were filed against Measure G - but every vote - especially yours - it critical since Measure G must win with a two-thirds majority. Learn more - and endorse Measure G - at www.AboutMeasureG.com.
