topPresident's Message

Happy 2010 everyone! I hope everyone had a fun and restful break. I definitely caught up on some much needed sleep! Can you believe we have started a new decade? Well BVE is off to a great start with so much happening on all fronts. Please read what our wonderful Alice Stauffer, our Legislative Representative, has to say about the State Budget deficit and what it means for our district. Our Character Count's Pillar this month is Responsibility which is especially pertinent in our current climate-it's  our responsibility to be informed.

I always encourage those that can make it to an afternoon meeting to please come to our Third Thursday PTA meetings at 1:00 in room 35. This next one is very important due to Superintendent Fred Brill being our speaker. He will be explaining and answering questions about the budget and how the Lafayette School District and Burton Valley might be affected by this revenue shortfall from the State. He is visiting all school sites and Jan. 21st is when we are pleased to welcome him. Please come with questions, your priorities and an open mind to begin this process our school and school district is faced with. For our working parents, school board meetings will be held at night with opportunities for community input and questions also. Dates and times for Jan. and Feb. are Wednesday, Jan.13th and Feb. 10th at 7pm at the district office located at 3477 School Street.  These dates are on the PTA website and in the school calendar.

I'd like to give a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful janitorial staff that helped make our Holiday Sing performance run so smoothly. Also, a huge thank you to Lisa Evaristo for her help along with our hospitality co-chairs, Kaisa Lyon and Renee Clever who served the tasty treats and coffee for us all. Lastly, a big thank you to all the parents who brought the tasty treats for us to enjoy!

So much fun stuff coming up so read on and enjoy!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for your attention,

Dana Fillinger Ashburn
PTA President

Help Our Schools while Having Fun

Over the next weeks and months, school budget news is likely to cause concern for all of us.  How can you help?  One way is to attend the LASF annual fundraising event, a Starry, Starry Night.  There you can meet like-minded parents and community members and raise money to support our schools while having fun...participate in the silent and live auctions, enjoy fabulous foods prepared by Susan Foord Catering, buy a raffle ticket or two and register for sign up parties for both adults and kids.

Event proceeds go to secure existing district and LASF programs and services through the remainder of this school year and to minimize deficit spending.   Our Starry, Starry Night is Saturday, January 30 at the Veterans Memorial Building, from 6-9 PM.  Tickets are $75 per person.  RSVP by mail or call the LASF office at 299-0644.  See our website www.lasf.org for details or on-line ticket purchases.

Legislative Update

Sacramento Update:
On Wednesday Governor Schwarzenegger gave a State of the State speech in which he said he would protect schools in his upcoming budget and proposed a constitutional amendment that California will never spend more money on prisons than on higher education (California's current budget allocates 11% to prisons and only 7.5% to higher education). The proof will be on Friday, January 8th when the Governor will release next year's budget, predicted to contain severe cuts to education.

The Governor also supported a budget reform initiative submitted by California Forward that would, among other things, drop the threshold for passing the state budget from a two-thirds vote to a majority vote. The California State PTA has long supported this idea.

Local Impact:
The Acalanes Union High School District has already announced proposed cuts of 31 positions next year, due to their $2.6 million deficit. The Lafayette School District is projecting we may be facing cuts of approximately $2 million over the next two school years.

What can parents do?
First step: get educated and fast! The next months will be a critical time for parents to be involved in advocating for the continuation of quality education for our children. Come to the following events, ask your questions, and let your voice be heard.

Upcoming Events:
1)  Burton Valley PTA Meeting, Thursday Jan. 21 at 1 pm in room 35
Lafayette School District School Superintendent Fred Brill will speak and answer questions on the budget and potential effects on our school.

2)  Superintendents Forum, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 pm, Acalanes HS Small Theatre

All 6 local school superintendents discuss the budget crisis and its affects on schools.

3) Advocacy Day -  February 17th -  all day trip to Sacramento

Designed to bring parents, teachers, and school administrators from our area together with our Legislators for a day of education and discussion about the current state public education in California.  Registration information available soon.

4) Lafayette School Board Meetings, Wednesday, Jan. 13th and Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm, District Office, 3477 School Street.

These are the folks who must make the tough decisions about our budget in the coming months

- Alice Stauffer   a.stauffer@att.net

BV dad with experience in model rocketry and with an engineering background looking for help to start a local community model rocketry club

Lafayette Library

Sweet Thursday at the Lafayette Library:
On January 28 at 7:30, The Friends of the Lafayette Library present Susan Wels, the author of the new biography of Amelia Earhart.  Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to fly solo across the Pacific. But Amelia Earhart was also a photographer, poet, hospital worker, fashion designer, social worker, and student of chemistry, physics, and medicine-before she vanished over the Pacific Ocean in July 1937.  Join us for this special event and enjoy coffee and dessert in the Community Hall of the New Lafayette Library and Learning Center.  For more information, visit http://www.lafayettelib.com.

Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 204 Open House
Calling all 5th grade boys and their parents - please join us for an open house to learn about scouting with Troop 204.  Troop 204 is Lafayette's oldest Boy Scout Troop, chartered in 1932.  We have been meeting in our own Scout cabin at the corner of First and School Streets since 1948.  We invite you to tour our historic cabin.  Learn why we have worn the "skull and crossbones" since the 1930's.  The 5th graders can watch the Scouts practice scouting skills (like lashings, fire building, and knot tying) and try some of our Dutch Oven desserts.  Meanwhile, the parents have an opportunity to hear from the leadership, learn about the troop and ask questions.  When:  Monday, Jan. 11th and Feb. 1st from 7:30 - 8:30 pm at Troop 204's cabin at the corner of 1st and School Street.  Bring a friend!  Questions? Call Pepe Davis at 925-283-0838 or emailpepedavis@comcast.net.  See you at the Cabin!
