topPresident's Message

The budget season is upon us. Thanks again to all who could make it to the meeting last week. Our guest speakers, Dr. Fred Brill, our superintendent, and Barbara Serwin, the President of LASF, gave very informative talks. We have put Barbara's speech/talk on our PTA website, www.bvepta.org because so many people seemed to have their questions answered about what LASF funds; not just music, art and science, and how they make their instructional decisions. I encourage you to look at it if you weren't there.

As you know through your classroom coordinators there are two more opportunities to hear what was said by attending the parent organization meetings at Stanley Middle School and Springhill Elementary. Do I sound like a broken record? The dates and times are: Stanley Middle - Friday, Jan. 29th at 8:30am and Springhill Elementary - Wednesday, Feb. 3rd at 7:00pm. There is one correction though re the time of the school board meeting on Feb. 10 -
it begins at 6:00 not 7:00
. The school board meeting on Wed. Feb. 10th is when the proposed cuts are being presented. Thanks to all who have turned in their green Prioritization Process questionnaire. Surveys should be in to the BV office Tues., Feb. 2nd (District office no later than Wed., Feb. 3rd).  These are such hard decisions. I don't envy the task. We have a wonderful school and in such a wonderful district-we will figure this all out.

That being said if you still feel outrage at this whole situation we have just the day for you!-Advocacy Day. Please join us to talk with our Legislators and other California superintendents. We learn a lot and get motivated to help change what's happening up in Sacramento so our districts are not put in this difficult position. Learn more by reading Alice's Legislative Update.

I just feel blessed to be surrounded by such caring, intelligent and creative parents that only want to find the best solution for their kids while still thinking of the greater good.

Thanks for your attention,

Dana Fillinger Ashburn
PTA President

Let's get ready to Play!  It's time to get with your friends, neighbors, book clubs, bunco groups... And come up with a creative party or event.  The "Pay to Plays" are a fun way to get involved, especially if you don't have a cabin in Tahoe or Season tickets to the local sports teams to give away.  It is a fun thing to do with friends and it helps to spread the cost out among the group.  Here are some parties already planned:  3rd Annual Backyard Bash,  Kids' Pizza & Powell's Party, Mom's Night Out Photo & Style Session,  Family Fiesta w/ Taco Truck & Games, Tamale Making Party... Be as creative as you want.  In the past we have had guest authors come to a book club type event,  Maybe a shopping event if you know a local boutique, a poker party... The sky is the limit!  Please contact Mary Caprio with your ideas, mcaprio@comcast.net.  It is a fun way to get involved.

Hot Lunch

Thank You! I want to thank all the moms, dads, siblings and grandparents that came to join us for having Lunch with your Children this week. I hope you all had fun spending some time with your kids and enjoying hot lunch. Our volunteers and I get to enjoy your children everyday, but it was truly fun watching the children show their parents where to get a drink or the salad bar. It should be known that we did nothing special for all of you that we don't do on a daily basis for your children.
Thank you SO much for spending your lunch time with us!

The Friends of the Lafayette Library present are proud to present an evening withMahbod Seraji, the author of Rooftops of Tehran.  This stunning literary debut paints a portrait of growing up, discovering love, and awakening to the reality of life in a nation on the verge of revolution in the 1970's.  From the rooftop of his house in Iran's sprawling capital city, the narrator watches his beautiful neighbor and secret love, Zari, promised since birth to his friend and mentor, nicknamed Doctor-- a man adored and respected by the entire neighborhood.  It is from this perch that the narrator witnesses the arrest of Doctor and the terrible repercussions brought about by the brutal regime.  Join us for this special event and enjoy coffee and dessert in the Community Hall of the New Lafayette Library and Learning Center.  For more information, visit http://www.lafayettelib.com.
