| President's Message What a great turnout to the meeting yesterday! Thank you to Superintendant Dr. Fred Brill for coming to speak at our PTA meeting. Also thank you to Barbara Serwin, President of LASF for speaking as well. For all those that couldn't make it please be sure to have your voice heard at the two School Board meetings on Feb. 10th and Feb. 17th at 7pm. These meetings are held at the Lafayette School District Office at 3477 School Street. If the turnout is large they will move the meeting to the Multi-purpose room at Stanley Middle School (next door). Thank you to Alice Stauffer for keeping us up to date on all the State budget issues that affect our district. Be sure to read her article about upcoming events and places to get more information. Please check the Friday folders for two things: the questionnaire (green paper) Dr. Brill handed out to get written feedback and the letter describing the questionnaire. Your input is vital in order for our school board to make these tough decisions. You can download the letter and questionnaire from the Legislative section of our PTA website at www.bvepta.org. The homework pass reward came out of an idea of how to entice people to come to the meeting. For those unable to attend the meeting, you can fill out the questionnaire and still receive a homework pass. We hope you understand the real purpose-to have your input be heard. I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge the crisis in Haiti. So many homes, buildings, people, children and families were suddenly devastated. We are all wondering about budgets and our schools when there is still so much to be thankful for. My Dad sends me inspirational emails from time to time which always help keep my life in perspective. Thanks Dad. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your attention, Dana Fillinger Ashburn PTA President danafillinger@me.com |

Legislative Update
Thank you for the great turn out to Thursday's PTA meeting to hear from and give feedback to Lafayette School District Superintendent Fred Brill. Parents had great ideas and insightful questions. So what do we do now to continue quality education for our kids? First, give the district your feedback as they face the difficult task of proposing cuts for our schools. Make sure to fill out a questionnaire for the district on your thoughts on priorities and ideas regarding revenue enhancement and areas of potential cost savings. See Dana's Presidents' message for details and visit www.bvepta.org. Second, realize that the budget problems we are facing stem from systemic problems in how the California budget process works. This is not a one or two year problem that will go away. To protect the fabulous schools and wonderful teachers we have we need to get educated about these issues and advocate for solutions. Please participate in or attend one or more of the following programs and events:
1) In the next few weeks the PTA Legislative team will be conducting a letter writing campaign, directed to our Governor and Legislators in Sacramento. Look for information here in the BV Broadcast and on the BV Website. 2) School Finance 101, Monday, Jan. 25, 7pm, Las Lomas High School Cafeteria Learn from State PTA Legislative VP Nancy Vandell why our schools receive lower per-pupil funding than any other state in the nation and what parents can do. 3)Superintendents Forum, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 pm, Acalanes High School Small Theatre All 6 local school superintendents will discuss the budget crisis and its affect on our School Districts. 4) Advocacy Day February 17th all day trip to Sacramento A one day crash course in how the budget works (and doesn't), who our legislators are and what they are trying to do for education, what the statewide PTA is advocating and what parents can do. The more of us that go, the bigger impact it has on Sacramento. Registration and information available online at www.signmeup.com/67766. The BV PTA will reimburse $50 for the first 10 people to register. 5) Lafayette School Board Meetings, Wed. Feb 10th at 7pm and Wed. Feb 17th at 7 pm, District Office, 3477 School Street. The proposed budget reduction plan will be presented at the Feb. 10th meeting, with further discussion planned for the Feb. 17th meeting.
