topPresident's Message

Where's the sunshine! This has been a grey week with a little rain (much needed) but has made me and my kids sleepy on one hand yet snuggly as well. I must say being up at school this week energized me by seeing all the wonderful parents rushing off to work or back to their homes to clean up the mess or whatever else we all are involved in. One thing is clear - you love those kids! Whatever struggles you have in your life I feel so blessed to be surrounded but such selfless parents who take the time for that last hug, giving that forgotten backpack to your little ones, or hurrying to class as not to be late before they go off to seize the day! I so often talk about the kids, the school, the teachers, the staff, and of course, the budget but I dedicate this article to all the parents and caregivers this week. All of this doesn't matter half as much as what you have with your little ones. Celebrate them and yourselves.

I have to remind you of a couple of things - next week, the Third Thursday, our afternoon PTA meeting is with our Superintendent, Dr. Fred Brill, at 1:00 in room 35. Here is your chance to have a discussion, have your input be heard and new ideas to be given by our parent community. Don't miss this chance. As I said last week the school board meetings held at night are also an opportunity to be informed and input to be heard in a larger setting.

The other reminders are that Monday is Martin Luther King Day - no school! My second grader is doing a short report on him and once again I'm humbled to think of all the hardships that have come before to bring us to where we are today. Also, Wed. Jan. 20th is Family Skate Night at Golden Skate. People like me that go every year know how fun it is so I encourage you to make a night out of it; go as a group or go with your own family and try it. It is a very special night. Bring a camera!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Have a great three-day weekend!

Thanks for your attention,

Dana Fillinger Ashburn
PTA President

Be Great

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.
You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace,

Legislative Update

Sacramento Update:
On Friday, January 8th Governor Schwarzenegger released his proposed state budget, which includes cuts to education of $2.4 billion. Many commentators fear the bottom line may be even worse, as much of the proposal for funding the budget relies on what the Sacramento Bee called "an almost non-existent chance of reaping a $6.9 billion windfall from Washington D.C..."

Local Impact:
On Wednesday, January 13, the Lafayette School Board approved a budget prioritization process, including opportunities for parent and community input, with a goal of reducing the budget by $1.2 million in the 2010-11 school year and by an additional $1.2 million in the 2011-12 school year.

What can parents do?
First step: get educated and fast! Second step: advocate for what you believe in. The next  months will be a critical time for parents to be involved in advocating for the continuation of quality education for our children. Come to the following events, ask your questions, and let your voice be heard.

Upcoming Events:LegEvents

1)    Burton Valley PTA Meeting, Thursday Jan. 21 at 1 pm in room 35
Burton Valley's main chance to give input on the budget.  Come hear Lafayette School District School Superintendent Fred Brill speak. Bring your questions and ideas on how we can reduce the budget without losing our students' superb educational experience.

2) School Finance 101, Monday, Jan. 25, 7pm, Las Lomas High School Cafeteria

Learn from State PTA Legislative VP Nancy Vandell why our schools receive lower per-pupil funding than any other state in the nation and what parents can do.

3)Superintendents Forum, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 pm, Acalanes HS Small Theatre
.
All 6 local school superintendents will discuss the budget crisis and its affect on our School Districts.

4) Advocacy Day February 17th all day trip to Sacramento

A one day crash course in how the budget works (and doesn't), who our legislators are and what they are trying to do for education, what the statewide PTA is advocating and what parents can do. The more of us that go, the bigger impact it has on Sacramento.  Registration and information available online at www.signmeup.com/67766. The BVE PTA will reimburse $50 for the first 10 people to register.

5) Lafayette School Board Meetings
Wed. Feb 10th at 7pm &  Wed. Feb 17th at 7 pm; District Office, 3477 School Street.

The proposed budget reduction plan will be presented at the Feb. 10th meeting, with further discussion and a final decision tentatively planned for the Feb. 17th meeting.
