| | | President's Message Hello! This week you get to hear from Executive VP, Kaisa Lyon. Dana is enjoying a well deserved break with her family. Monday our teachers and staff were treated to a wonderful lunch put on by the TASA committee headed up by Lea Plummer, Casey Sasner and Sharon Nagel. Thank you and all who helped for showing our teachers and staff how thankful we are to have them supporting our kids in all they do.
Looking forward to next week, March 5th is Read Across America - our children will have special events occurring in their classrooms focusing on the importance and pleasure of reading. I know it is a great reminder to me to slow down and enjoy a great book with my kids. Happy reading!
Also, the Burton Valley Book Fair is coming up. The Book Fair begins on Saturday March 6th and ends on Thursday March 11th - mark your calendars. We have a wonderful children's author, Oliver Chin, who will be reading his latest book, Year of the Tiger, to our children during a special school assembly on Wednesday March 10th. You and your family can also meet the author that evening from 6 - 8 p.m. in the library. If you weren't able to pre-order a book for the author to sign, you can purchase one at the Book Fair and have him autograph it that evening. Then be sure to head over to the Ice Cream Social for a special dessert to end your evening!

Legislative Update
State Update School Districts throughout California are making tough decisions as they wrestle with how to keep an educational system together for our children in the face of the third year in a row of drastic budget cuts from Sacramento. Pink slips are being issued to teachers up and down the state. Local Update At the February 24th meeting, the Lafayette School Board passed a budget reduction plan for 2010-2011 with over one million dollars in cuts. The Board and Superintendent Fred Brill received numerous letters, emails, and surveys from parents and teachers regarding the proposed cuts. Thanks to all of you who gave your input.
The Board did decide to limit two of the proposed cuts in response: classroom aides will be reduced one hour a week instead of two, and the instrumental music teachers and science lab teachers will have their hours reduced by 25% instead of 40%. A big thank you to Superintendent Brill and the School Board members for working so hard and being responsive to the community's input in such a difficult situation. What can parents do? 1) Local Control Parcel Tax Iniative The California State PTA has endorsed the "Local Control of Local Classrooms Funding Act" ballot initiative and is helping to collect signatures to get it on the November ballot. This ballot measure would lower the vote threshold to pass a school parcel tax from two-thirds to 55%. It limits the amount of a parcel tax to $250 and requires that an exemption be offered to anyone aged 65 or older. Parents can help in two ways: 1) sign the petition to get this initiative on the November ballot, and 2) collect signatures yourself. Signatures must be submitted by March 31rst to qualify for the November ballot. You can get information on the initiative and print copies of the petition at www.improvedschoolfunding.com. 2) Join the Legislative Team I need help! Working on these legislative issues needs more than one person- we need a Burton Valley team. If you are interested in helping with the ballot measure petition drive, Acalanes parcel tax, general education for our parent community and the broader community (80% of Lafayette families have no kids in school and are probably not as aware of the education crisis), please contact me. I would be interested to hear your ideas and appreciate any amount of time you have to give.
