| President's Message I wish everyone a wonderful President's Day weekend. Everyone deserves a four day weekend that's for sure! I hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine's Day as well on Sunday. With back east in a deep freeze, I, for one, have appreciated our mild weather.
Last night I attended the School Board meeting at Stanley to listen to the proposed budget reduction plan and was sadly surprised to hear our superintendent, Dr. Fred Brill, announce the bad news that the district received from the state today, only four hours before the meeting. The state will be cutting between $175-$300 per student, which translates to further cuts of $500,000 to $960,000 to the proposed budget. As you may imagine there will be another board meeting on Feb. 17th to discuss the revised budget.
As I sat at the meeting, I was touched by the number of teachers, staff, and many parents who came to have their questions answered and many to have their opinions heard. This is a tough time and all voices are welcome. If you haven't sign up for Advocacy Day this might just inspire you to do so since this is all coming from the State's inability to balance its budget. Please note that after school child care will be available in Mrs. Rasmussen's room - see the Legislative Update for more info. I'd like to add that so many are working hard for our kids. Just look at your music and science teachers and the staff that support all our wonderful teachers. I do love Lafayette and I am so proud of our caring parents at Burton Valley. Have a great long weekend and again a Happy Valentine's Day! Dana Fillinger Ashburn PTA President danafillinger@me.com |

- Hide quoted text - Advocacy Day - Wednesday, February 17th all day trip to Sacramento
Given the ongoing severe budget cuts to our schools in Lafayette, it is even more important to bring pressure on Sacramento to fix the problems that created this mess. Join me, PTA President Dana Fillinger, Burton Valley Principal Sue Rusk and many other concerned parents from Lamorinda and our broader east bay community. Advocacy Day is a one day crash course in how the budget works (and doesn't), who our legislators are and what they are trying to do for education, what the statewide PTA is advocating and what parents can do. The more of us that go, the bigger impact it has on Sacramento. Speakers include our local legislators and the Republican caucus chair. Come listen and ask your questions. Registration and information available online at www.signmeup.com/67766. The BVE PTA will reimburse $50 for the first 10 people to register.
***If your kids need care after school until you get back from Sacramento(around 3:30-4:30 pm) teacher Helen Rasmussen has generously offered her room #14 for an after school homework and hang out place. Wonderful PTA Board member Nicole Berzins will be supervising the kids along with Helen's daughter. Please email me a.stauffer@att.net if you will be using the after school care, so we know which kids to expect.*** Lafayette School Board Meetings, Wed. Feb 17th at 7 pm District Office, 3477 School Street.
Discussion and a chance for community input to the proposed budget reduction plan. Cuts could include 40% reductions in the salaries of music and science lab teachers, increased class size and significant reductions in classroom aide hours. Letter Writing Campaign Send letters to the Governor, key legislators and our local legislators advocating funding for education in California. Look for tables at drop off and pick up on Tuesday or you can download the letters (www.lastrampaspta.org//walnut_creek_feb10.pdf) and drop them off at the school office on Tuesday. (If you live in Lafayette, Nancy Skinner is your Assemblymember and Mark DeSaulnier is your State Senator).

Smoothies: Your children may have told you that the smoothies are different or that they didn't like them lately...well, me neither! I have been in a stand off with our smoothie vendor for awhile now & I think I finally won! The 'old' normal smoothies are back and the only thing we are nailing down is the flavor. Currently it is peach but I am trying to get strawberry back. We will be having them on the normal days -Wednesday as a separate item or Friday with the hot lunch entree. So give them another try! Thanks. Lisa Evaristo bvehotlunch@yahoo.com
