| President's Message How I love the Holiday Sing! The children were fantastic from the 5th graders in their Santa hats and sun glasses all the way down to the cute kindergarteners in their pajamas. What a great show with a huge thank you to Carol Kerr, Ellen Winnick, Liz Brummel and Wendy Clymer for their time, talent, patience and for inspiring our kids. Thanks to Fred Brill our Lafayette School District Superintendant for coming to speak as well. He will be speaking again at our first PTA meeting of 2010 on Jan. 21st at 1:00 about how the California State projected budget deficit of 20.6 billion dollars will impact our school and our district. I hope you have some fun, relaxing time with your children these next two weeks-- playing, doing art projects or just having pajama days with lots of hot chocolate. I wish all a wonderful winter break and a Happy New year! Dana Fillinger Ashburn PTA President danafillinger@me.com |

A Special Thank You to Our BV Broadcast Advertisers
The people who advertise in the Broadcast pay ad placement fees to the PTA so they can promote their businesses to the BV community. In turn, these fees support the activities of the Burton Valley PTA. This past year, advertisers have promoted tutoring, educational camps, music lessons, licensed insurance and contracting services, ear piercing, photography, sewing classes, homes for rent, vacation rentals and even house and pet sitting services! Many of the advertisers are BV alumni or parents of BV school children and all of them are part of the Lafayette community. Many thanks and Happy Holiday wishes to all of our BV Broadcast advertisers - we look forward to promoting your business in the New Year!

LASF and the Library Back in the planning stages of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, we had reserved space to move our LASF offices into the new building. At the time this decision was made, our requirements for office space were small. In the intervening years since that decision, our LASF operations have grown and the space we had reserved at the Library turned out to be too small for our needs. In late October as we began preparations to make the move, we realized that no amount of "closet cleaning and de-cluttering" would get our office size reduced enough to fit into the Library space. With real disappointment, the LASF board voted NOT to move as the change might impede day-to-day operations and limit our growth. So we will stay in our office just a few short blocks away from the Library. Our two organizations will continue to be good neighbors and good partners in community service. Happy Holidays As the year ends, we think about all we are grateful for. The gift of being in such a wonderful and generous community is one to treasure. Thank you for your support as LASF works with the PTA and community to deliver the high quality enrichment that sets Lafayette schools apart. Wishing you abundance, happiness and peace in the New Year. Happy holidays!
- From Juleen Lapporte, BV LASF Representative

Legislative Update
The PTA legislative team is watching Sacramento for developments in the state budget situation. The Legislative Analyst's Office is currently forecasting a $20.7 billion deficit in the state budget for 2010-2011. On January 8th, 2010, Governor Schwarzenegger will release his proposed budget for 2010-2011. His proposal will surely include more devastating cuts in the education budget. Our Lafayette School District is projecting this may mean reducing our budget by approximately $2 million over the next two school years. The Acalanes Union High School District has already announced proposed cuts of 31 positions for next year, due to their $2.6 million deficit.
In these times, it is critical that parents become involved in whatever way they can to help ensure the continuation of quality education for our children. What can we do? First, educate yourself. The Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs has two events coming up to educate the community about what the State budget crisis means to our students. The first is a Superintendents' Forum on February 4 at 7 pm (location TBA), featuring our local superintendents discussing what the budget crisis means to our schools. The second is Advocacy Day on February 17th, the leg. team's annual bus trip to Sacramento. Advocacy Day is designed to bring parents, teachers, and school administrators together with our Legislators for a day of discussion about the current state of public education in California. Registration information will be available soon. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to be more involved.
