| President's Message "It snowed!!" my husband exclaimed Tuesday morning when he pulled up the shades. I said, "What did you say?" amidst my symphony of tooth brushing. Wasn't that snow a treat for all? Coming to school and seeing the kids on the playground making snowballs will live in my mind forever. Fantastic! Part of my article last week was edited out by my great and too humble editor so I made her promise to not touch it this week. I'd like to thank someone that works hard behind the scenes and that is Gina Dawson. She edits and puts together this electronic newsletter each week and does a beautiful job! I've enjoyed her seasonal graphics and quotes each week. She also does the special bulletins that go out throughout the year as well! Thank you for putting so much time into this week after week! Now don't touch that Gina! This weekend, my family stopped by the Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs regional showcase of the Reflections Fine Arts entries. We were so impressed by the amount of talent found throughout Lafayette, Walnut Creek and Moraga schools. I hope you all picked up some bargain books at the Book Bonanza this week, which make great and economical gifts for the season. Thank you to Carroll Martin, Ann Clark, Gail Nugent and our booksellers - the hardworking students. Another great gift idea here at BVE are book fair gift certificates. You can pick them up in the office and while there you might inquire about the "Mixed Bag" eco-friendly, reusable bags for sale that will be showcased outside the office next week and available for purchase at the Holiday sing as well. More information is found below in the Broadcast. We saw them around town so thought we'd make them available here at school --plus part of the proceeds help support our great school. Next Friday is our wonderful Holiday Sing Concert. Thanks to LASF for funding our music program and so much more here in our district. We wouldn't have this concert if it weren't for LASF, our fabulous teachers and of course our talented students! Back on the green issue, Lisa Evaristo reminds us to please feel free to bring your own reusable mug with you that day to help with clean up and the amount of garbage generated. This is a wonderful concert that you won't want to miss so check the schedule to make sure you know which program your child is performing in. See you there and stay warm! Thanks for your attention and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Dana Fillinger Ashburn PTA President danafillinger@me.com |

Congratulations to all BVE students who entered this year's Reflections Fine Arts Competition and Recognition program. Legislative Update
The PTA legislative team is watching Sacramento for developments in the state budget situation. The Legislative Analyst's Office is currently forecasting a $20.7 billion deficit in the state budget for 2010-2011. On January 8th, 2010, Governor Schwarzenegger will release his proposed budget for 2010-2011. His proposal will surely include more devastating cuts in the education budget. Our Lafayette School District is projecting this may mean reducing our budget by approximately $2 million over the next two school years.
In these times, it is critical that parents become involved in whatever way they can to help ensure the continuation of quality education for our children. What can we do? First, educate yourself. The Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs has two events coming up to educate the community about what the State budget crisis means to our students. The first is aSuperintendents' Forum on February 4 at 7 pm (location TBA), featuring our local superintendents discussing what the budget crisis means to our schools. The second isAdvocacy Day on February 17th, the leg. team's annual bus trip to Sacramento. Advocacy Day is designed to bring parents, teachers, and school administrators together with our Legislators for a day of discussion about the current state of public education in California. Registration information will be available soon. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to be more involved.
