| President's Message Thanks to all who attended our first PTA meeting this past Thursday. What a fantastic turnout! I hope you found it informative and not too rushed. We had many guests; Tom Mulvaney spoke about Measure G (more information to follow), Stephenie Teichman came as our School Board member liaison for Burton Valley and a special thank you goes to Michael Dawson who showed us the great features of our new PTA website and took home lots of suggestions by those who attended. Great job everyone! There are some great community building events in the works so please check our calendar below and the Burton Valley PTA Website www.burtonvalleypta.org. We'll be adding more information to this site in the next few weeks. Check out the cool quote below this message about volunteering. Beautiful! We hope to see you the Third Thursday's of each month! As you may have read in the Contra Costa Times there was an attempted abduction case at Valley Verde Middle School in the Mt. Diablo School District. The student was walking by himself when an older man approached him and used aggressive language to lure him into his vehicle. Law enforcement has been informed and is fully involved in this case. Please speak with your children about safety and ask them to contact parents, district staff, or the police if they observe anything suspicious. The safety of all our children is our number one priority. Thanks for your attention,Dana Fillinger Ashburn |

Legislative Update
Legislative Report Hello Burton Valley Parents. I will be representing the Burton Valley PTA this year on our local PTA's Legislation Team. The Team includes reps from all the Lamorinda and Walnut Creek parents clubs and PTAs for both elementary and high schools. The Legislation team will provide parents with current information about state school financing, legislative proposals and how they might affect our school district, and will let you know what actions (votes, phone calls, letter writing campaigns, etc) you can take to influence legislators on key issues that impact our schools. It promises to be an interesting year! Besides following and participating in the continuing budget saga, we will be helping with Measure G in November to fund the Acalanes District (where most of our kids are heading for high school). Look to this weekly update for information and check out the Las Trampas Creek Legislative Team website: www.lastrampaspta.org/legislation.html
Upcoming program: Improving Funding for Public Schools Tuesday, September 29th 7-9 pm at the Contra Costa Office of Public Education, 77 Santa Barbara Street, Pleasant Hill This program should be very helpful for getting the basics on how the state allocates money to schools, the effects of recent budget cuts, and the direction and actions of grassroots movements to solve the budget crisis. Speakers include the Education Commissioner for the CA State PTA, the Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools, reps from Assembly Member Tom Torlakson's office and the CA Teacher's Association. Hot Lunch Check your 'balance statements! If you are NOT recieving a 'balance statement' every Thursday in your email please let me know! Starting next week we will be "pulling" cards for those families that accounts are in the negative. Please don't make me do this to your sweet child! This is how it works... If your family account has a zero or negative balance by 9am on Monday morning -your child(ren)'s card will be "pulled". This means that a "X lunch" card will replace their lunch card in the rack. They will be able to get a plain cheese sandwich, but that is all. Here is something important...if you forget, or get the check or online payment in AFTER 9am on Monday...sorry...I am a volunteer! I do NOT sit around waiting for your payment to come in. :-( Although I may put it back early, if I am up at school, policy is a week (Monday to Monday) so Please don't make me the bad guy!
