| President's Message
I
know it's been said before, but we have a generous community of
parents, truly. Last week's plea for committee help was dutifully
answered. We have just a few openings left and I'm confident we will
fill them. A more in-depth description of each is below. Fall Family Picnic: 3
people. Grab a buddy or two to coordinate games, prizes, food and
volunteers for this long-standing, fun-filled Burton Valley
tradition. Date is set for Sunday, October 18th from 11-3 pm. Training
provided as well as list of volunteers to call into action. Good
community builder. Gift Wrap: 2 people. Get
meaningful time with a friend and coordinate orders for Sally Foster
gift wrap by sending out order packets via the Friday Folder. Promote
sales through ads in the Broadcast and posters around school. Earn money for our kids. Fall. Staff Support Appreciation: Make
posters and deliver flowers for the staff at Burton Valley. Recognize
office support, custodians, music teachers, science teachers and
librarian. It's a good Girl or Boy Scout community service project.
February. I know there are still some more terrific people out there that can help out our school. Email Francie Low (francielow@comcast.net) if you would like more info or are ready to take on a fun job.

Legislative Advocacy Update: Special Election May 19th The outcome of the upcoming May 19th state-wide election will determine whether the state budget will be another $6 billion in deficit and whether there will be more
cuts to state education funding in the '09-10 budget year, in addition
to the $8 billion shortfall already announced by the Legislative
Analyst on March 13th. The six propositions tied to the budget are
important to understand. The passage or failure of Prop 1A, 1B and 1C will affect state education funding. Here is the link to the Legislative Analysts Office which provides information about each proposition: www.lao.ca.gov/laoapp/ballot_source/propositions.aspx.
The State PTA has taken the following positions on the May 19th Special Election:
Measure 1A - Support: Creates
a rainy day fund, temporarily extends tax increases, and provides a
funding mechanism for Proposition 1B, which will repay $9 billion to
schools. Measure 1B - Support: Repays schools approximately $9 billion in Proposition 98 funding, beginning in 2011-12. Measure 1C - Support: Generates
$5 billion in revenues this year by securing and updating the state
lottery; school funding would no longer be tied to lottery revenues,
with no net change to overall school funding. Measure 1D - Oppose: Transfers
monies away from First 5 programs created by Proposition 10 (1998) for
a period of five years, with the intent that the funds be used to
protect health and human service programs for children supported by the
state's General Fund. The measure makes other changes to how First 5
funds may be spent. Measure 1E - Support: Transfers
monies away from mental health programs funded by Proposition 63 (2004)
for a period of two years. The monies would go into the state General
Fund to support mental health services. Measure 1F - No position: Prohibits legislators and the Governor from receiving pay raises when the state budget is running a deficit.
The
Special Election will be critical to current and ongoing education
funding. If you would like more information or have any questions
please feel free to email or call me.

Burton Valley Events
The
last week of class visits to the library is May 18th-21st. We will
begin inventory on May 19th. If you have an hour to spare, please come
to the library.
A reminder that all library materials should be returned by May 21st. If there's a book you cannot find, Yet with your name the computer assigned, Then, alas and alack, one fact is true, The cost of the book belongs to you. Return all the books or you must pay For any book that has gone astray. For here at Burton Valley that's the rule, No report card `til that book's back in school. So please rush out and search your closet. Look for Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl and the Hobbit. Look under your bed, the refrigerator, and stove, `Cause you never know where a book may rove. Then bring them all back in a great big pile. We'll greet you happily with a hug and a smile. `Cause every book that's returned right here Means some other student can enjoy it next year.
A friendly reminder from your librarian, Mrs. Bochte Camp Read-A-Lot:
Please sign up for Camp Read-a-Lot, Lafayette School District's summer
reading club. Look for the sign-up sheets in your child's Friday
Folder! This is a recreational reading program designed to encourage a
love of reading. A book list is available for downloading from the
school web site www.lafsd.k12.ca.us/burton_valley/read.
Students who sign up will receive a copy of the requirements and a
recording sheet. A prize will be given to all students who meet the
requirements and turn in their recording sheet to their new teachers in

that are missing their owners! Please check to see if any of your
child's items may be waiting for you. Carts are located outside the BV
office and in the hallway leading to the first grade classrooms. All
unclaimed items will be donated to charity on the last day of school.
ALS Fundraiser May 15th at Orinda Country CLub: BV
showed incredible support when we rallied about Scott Turner to raise
funds to support Scott's father, who unfortunately recently lost his
valiant fight against ALS. Lafayette has also strongly supported Matt
Chaney, a long time BV resident. Matt has been
battling ALS for over 9 years and is an active Board member of the ALS
Association chapter. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a
fatal neurological disease which has no known cause or cure and
unfortunately, most costs of treating the disease are not covered by
medical insurance. The event has two options, either Golf at 1pm or
Dinner at 6pm. There will be great auction items available including
trips to Punta Mita and the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta. Sign
up at www.alsabayarea.org or by calling 415-904-2572.
