topPresident's Message

Open House is like a big party--kids running everywhere, fun things to do and see, and good food to eat--with a classroom side show. I'm always impressed to see the things my children have been learning. And then I'm flabbergasted. How is it that when I ask them, "What did you do in school today?" they don't have an answer?

Their teachers have their poems hanging from the ceiling, book reviews pasted to the walls, craft projects in every corner, and journals for science, math and reading stacked on the students' desks. Our kids--and their teachers--are busy!
I'm sure you've heard about the thinking strategies approach. It encourages students to analyze what they're learning, rather than memorize facts. So, when our children read a story, they're asked to think about what could happen next, what they have in common with the characters, and how they see the plot's twists and turns.

Now Mrs. Pierce, one of our science teachers, is using thinking strategies in her lessons with second graders. She teaches them her science unit, but then has them write about what they learned. In my daughter's journal entry about heredity and genetic traits, she had to think about what pieces of me and my husband came together to make the person she is. And that takes the lesson one step further.

So even though my stress level goes up at the end of the night when I can't find my fifth grader, my kindergartener is cold, tired and whiny, and I can't pry my second grader from the bubbles, I know my children are in good hands. Thank you BVE staff for all your hard work.

We have a few more jobs to fill for next year, and I'm hoping you'll find one that's easy enough to fit into your schedule. Here's your chance to get more involved, or stay involved, or contribute in that way you've been wanting to but just haven't made the commitment. We'd love to have you!

There's something for everyone. A few are one-time-only volunteer events (Reservoir Run in October, Escrip on Bobcat Day). And then there are bigger jobs. Did you have fun at this year's Parent Party? Want to bring your own creativity to the event? We'd love to have you.

Please take a look at the jobs listed below. Feel free to contact me (tjkirke@comcast.net) or incoming President Angela Ketcham (theketchams@sbcglobal.net) if you have any questions about the positions.

Red ribbon week--promote daily student participation in program that encourages students to live healthy (program already in place, just needs execution).
TASA--organize a teacher and staff lunch three times during the year (fall, winter, spring).
Teacher appreciation--organize school-wide celebration of our teachers (in May).
Parent party--organize a party and fundraiser for our parent community.
Escrip--encourage participation in the program, offer support for signing up online.
Reservoir run--assist with the event and recruit other volunteers.

Parking Committee Update

The parking committee, made up of Burton Valley parents, teachers, and administration, has gotten final approval from the City of Lafayette traffic engineers to make changes in the kindergarten parking lot to increase safety and improve traffic flow. Changes will include a curbside drop off zone, a dedicated parking area for bus and handicap parking, and a new crosswalk. Work will be done this summer. At Bobcat Day, and throughout August and September, you will receive information about how you can help make our morning and afternoon traffic situation as safe and efficient as possible.

In case you missed it, Mrs. Raos is retiring and we are sending her off with a BVE Popsicle Party!!  If your child had Mrs. Raos as a teacher at anytime, please join us for a Farewell Celebration on Wednesday June 6th at 2:30 in the Main Quad. There will be a few speeches, gifts presented and yes, POPSICLES!   One of the gifts presented to Mrs. Raos will be a scrapbook filled with pages from all of her former and current students.  Again, if your child had Mrs. Raos please have them design 1 page of her scrapbook.  Use a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper (any color is fine) and be sure your child signs their first AND last name on the front of their page.  If you know of older children who are no longer at BVE and would like to participate, please pass this message on to them as well.  All pages are due no later than next Friday, June 1st in the office.
If you have any questions, please contact Veronique Kuhner or Charisse Stratford.

CAMP READ-A-LOT- New and Revised!!!
It is that time again to start thinking about summer plans. We encourage you to make reading an important part of your child's summer plans. We are very excited to introduce a new idea for our Camp Read-A-Lot program. This year, Burton Valley is partnering with Scholastic to boost our participation and to ensure that all of our students continue to read over the summer. Look for the information packet in your child's Friday Folder on May 25th! Be sure to sign the pledge to have your student(s) participate in Camp Read-a-Lot (Lafayette School District's summer reading club) this summer. A book list is available for download from the school web site (www.lafsd.k12.ca.us/burton_valley/read). This year, Burton Valley is going to have a Scholastic "Summer Reading" Book sale May 29th-June 1st in the Library. This will be a great way to get your child(ren) motivated to read. A prize will be given to all students who meet the requirements and turn in their recording sheet to their new teachers in the Fall.
