| President's Message Have you been thinking about books and ice cream? We have a night for you! Get ready for this year's Book Fair starting March 6th, yes that's right, it starts on Saturday. We hope all who are able to, come to the parent coffee from 8:30am-9:30am on Monday. This is a great way to shop without little ones pulling on you and maybe even make some new friends. Building community through books-what could be better! What about the ice cream? That happens Wednesday night from 6pm-8pm with author, Oliver Chin there to sign books, and; you guessed it, ice cream. If you haven't pre-ordered his book, you can pick one up that night at the book fair. Thanks to all who have signed up to help sell books and a special thank you to both Stephanie Snyder and Lorna Levante who are organizing the book fair this year. There are many opportunities to earn "Scholastic Bucks" so read their announcement below. This great event ends Thursday, March 11th. Also, Jill Murray, along with other volunteers, will be selling the Mixed Bags -helping the earth with proceeds going to the PTA. We hope you pick up one to help carry all of your books home. Bags will be available on Saturday, each day after school and on the night of the ice cream social. The new spring line is very colorful! It's not too late to sign up for the Science Fair on March 18th so get those entry forms turned in. What a great night it is so even if your child doesn't enter this year come see what all this fuss is about-it may just inspire someone to join in next year! More exciting details are below. Danielle Gallagher and Danyle Johansson have organized a truly spectacular night. Thanks to Kaisa for writing a great article last week. It was fantastic to spend some quality time with my family! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your attention. Dana Fillinger Ashburn PTA President danafillinger@me.com |
Celebrate Read Across America Day | Think back to your favorite childhood book. Did it open your eyes to new possibilities; introduce you to characters unlike anyone you knew in real life; or simply comfort you like an old, familiar friend? Whatever the case, we can all remember our favorite stories decades later. Such is the power of reading. Read Across America Day at BV celebrates the joy of reading with "celebrity" booklovers and costumed characters. It's a wonderful tradition. Another great tradition is reading together as a family. When you ask your kids what their favorite part of the day was, share with them your most memorable books. Then visit the Book Fair to find new favorites. Dr. Seuss would be proud!

Our success depends on you...your donations, of course, but also your volunteer efforts. We are recruiting volunteers at every school site for next year and we would love to have your help. Would you be interested in helping with a Science or Art Fair? Being a Donation Day representative or Phonathon caller? Do you have graphic design, photography or writing skills that you can offer? We have all sorts of volunteer jobs of varying size and requiring various skills. To learn more, please contact our LASF Recruitment Chair, Mary Bakos, at mlbakos@yahoo.com or your LASF Representative, Juleen Lapporte at juleenlapporte@yahoo.com.

Legislative Update
State Update School Districts throughout California are making tough decisions as they wrestle with how to keep an educational system together for our children in the face of the third year in a row of drastic budget cuts from Sacramento. Pink slips are being issued to teachers up and down the state. Local Update On Thursday teachers from Burton Valley passed out information on the budget cuts in California and wore pink to highlight the many teachers in the state who will be receiving pink slips in anticipation of layoffs for the upcoming school year. What can parents do to help? 1) Local Control Parcel Tax Iniative The California State PTA has endorsed the "Local Control of Local Classrooms Funding Act" ballot initiative and is helping to collect signatures to get it on the November ballot. This ballot measure would lower the vote threshold to pass a school parcel tax from two-thirds to 55%. It limits the amount of a parcel tax to $250 and requires that an exemption be offered to anyone aged 65 or older. Parents can help in two ways: 1) sign the petition to get this initiative on the November ballot, and 2) collect signatures yourself. Signatures must be submitted by March 31rst to qualify for the November ballot. PTA is attempting to be the first organization ever to qualify a ballot initiative without using paid signature gatherers. You can get information on the initiative and print copies of the petition at www.improvedschoolfunding.com. 2) Join the Legislative Team I need help! Working on these legislative issues needs more than one person- we need a Burton Valley team. If you are interested in helping with the ballot measure petition drive, Acalanes parcel tax, general education for our parent community and the broader community (80% of Lafayette families have no kids in school and are probably not as aware of the education crisis), please contact me. I would be interested to hear your ideas and appreciate any amount of time you have to give. 3) Come learn about the Acalanes Parcel Tax At our March PTA Meeting (Thursday, March 18th at 1pm in Room 35) a representative from the Acalanes Parcel Tax Campaign will fill us in on the details of this campaign and ask for the Burton Valley PTA's endorsement.
