LPIE
topPresident's Message

Things I've learned in the past year:

1) There are so many people willing to help make our school community a better place. I asked parents to help with a traffic committee and had a dozen responses in no time. We asked for help with the Parent Party and got a graphic artist, a raffle chair and pay-to-play organizers lined up. I could go on and on.

2) Our teachers are creative, innovative and dedicated. They're being taught new ways to engage our students in reading and math, and they love it. They want more coaching and training. They want to experiment with the techniques in the classroom. They are not mailing it in--they're reinventing.

3) Our school truly is a public/private partnership. Lafayette schools aren't great because we care about education (although it certainly helps). Our schools are great because we care enough and can afford to donate thousands of dollars for teacher aides, music education, science, technology, reading and math specialists and teacher training. We're willing and able to pay more property taxes to protect our schools.

4) Sure, the state budget is a mess, and the way things get funded is confusing. I wish we could wipe it all clean and start over. But we can't. And once again, we're faced with a crisis. If we voters don't support the tax initiatives in November, our district will lose an estimated $1.2 million. We need to spread the word.

5) All of this dedication from parents, educators and residents makes Lafayette a truly special place to live. I have been honored to serve on behalf of our BVE community this year. It has been time well spent. I know that Angela Ketcham, our new PTA President, will have a fabulous year. She has been my sounding board and go-to person. I hope she finds it as rewarding as I have.

Hot Lunch

3 volunteers needed for next year: Are you a 4 grade parent next year? We still need 3 parents to volunteer for an easy job: managing the green team. It takes being at lunch for the 1st week of school then 1 hour every 6 weeks to make sure the next group is trained correctly. Approximately once a month 1 person needs to pick up the (ready to go) recycling to bring to the recycling center in WC to get the check that pays for the end of year 4th grade party. It is an EASY job! If you will have a 4th grader next year...well that is the only requirement! Training will be the first day of school. Please contact me now if you are interested! This has to be filled!

My Retirement & Thank yous: 13 years ago I started volunteering with our brand new Hot Lunch program. 6 years ago I took over running the program. I have had all 3 of my children, a niece, 2 nephews and hundreds for of other children go through hot lunch... and I have loved it! I got to be there everyday for my kids while being challenged and growing in ways that ...well are crazy good! I have been blessed with approximately 235 volunteers a year that come in for 60-90 minutes every day and love our children through their service to our school. Every child who worked greenteam or was one of our "milk kids" were truly my favorite.
Then, there were the people that really have been there for me in so many ways...Michelle Poole who has been there for every time I called out for help and been a true friend, Jeff Fitzmyer for washing every apron every week.. for years, coming every time I needed someone to fill in, lending a hand with whatever I needed and just for being a great guy, Mary Burrill who worked miracles on our computer system & spent her Sundays making calls, Maureen Wickline who for years emailed you your balance statement & sent the red envelopes home on Fridays,  Stephanie Reilly for repairing our aprons, and Jeanne Williams for going above and beyond on delivering Fiona (pig) her food 3 days each week. Three other people also need a HUGE thank you...Marsha Dahl, Marcia Morucci & Anne Olson..you gals are the absolute BEST! Thank you for your patients and support. Lastly, Larry, Jimmy and Roger...you guys have been a blast to work with and I will miss our conversations. If  I've missed anyone I'm sorry! I have been truly blessed by all of you over the years!

Now, I know the buzz has been how "hard" my job is. I don't want to down play it - it has had its difficult times and a lot of hours, but I've always said I do this job because I love it -and I do! It brings together my 2 passions: kids and food. It has been my pleasure to work with all of you and to get to know all your children. I will miss it, but the good news is I now have a new business with my sister right here in Lafayette. I'll give you a hint: It's a cooking school...shocker!

Thank you for letting me be a part of your children's school experience and for all of you that have volunteered to work Hot Lunch. Still the BEST place to volunteer your time...next year. :-) (I can't just stop you know!)
Thank you,
Lisa Evaristo
